Kosta Boda and renowned international designer and artist Lena Bergström have been awarded the honor by the International Handball Federation to design and produce the new trophy for the IHF 2023 Women’s Handball World Championship co-hosted by Denmark, Norway and Sweden (November 29th – December 17th, 2023).

The new trophy was donated to the International Handball Federation by the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish Handball Federations on the occasion of the 26th IHF Women’s World Championships 2023, with the objective that this handcrafted showpiece by Lena Bergström – produced at Kosta Glassworks in Sweden – will become the permanent trophy for future world championships.

Conceptualized by highly decorated Swedish designer Lena Bergström, the impressive trophy beautifully captures the natural movement of the player and ball in motion. A true sports enthusiast and former athlete, Bergström immersed herself in the women’s game with a single-minded pursuit to freeze that distinctive moment that reflects both the athleticism and beauty of the sport. Additionally, Bergström and Kosta Boda took on the challenge to deliver a true statement, ensuring that this trophy is unique, powerful, and evocative enough to be accepted by the global handball community as the permanent trophy going forward. To boost appeal and interest, Bergström cleverly made the base of the trophy interchangeable allowing this part to be customized for upcoming tournaments.

“It is an incredible honor for me and Kosta Boda to be asked to design a sports trophy of this magnitude,” says Lena Bergström. “We immediately directed all of our energy and expertise on delivering a trophy that is truly representative for women’s handball globally, that is iconic enough to match the occasion and that will stand the test of time to become synonymous with the biggest stage in the women’s game.”

Lena Bergström’s striking trophy design consists of four individual parts – all made of glass and each crafted separately using multiple professional techniques and applications – that form a united bond reflecting Bergström’s abstract and minimalistic interpretation of a handball player in motion:

− The impressive oval base of the trophy is meticulously hand-cut from a solid block of glass to perfectly reflect Bergström’s trademark Carat pattern. The base is then hand painted in 21K gold for an exceptional finish.
− The arm attached to the base is mouthblown in a mold adding both dynamic movement and strength – confidently presented in olive-gold.
− The seamlessly integrated hand is individually cast in glass. The emerging solid piece is diligently hand-cut and polished to deliver a perfect shape that is hand painted in 21K gold.
− Resting in the hand is the elegant mouthblown ball which is hand-cut to accent its characteristic hexagon panels.
− Logo and text applications are sandblasted and enhanced in gold color to maintain the impeccable quality and integrity of this beautifully handcrafted trophy.

In her new exhibition at Galleri Glas, glass artist and designer Lena Bergström looks both forward and backward as she presents an overall picture of what her glass art is here and now — her own dream world in glass, Le Na Land.

Le Na Land is Bergström’s own wonderland that takes shape in the mood of the glass. A soft, sensual and temporary landscape with austere facets that create a variety of soft and sharp contrasts. The colors reflect the mood she is in right now — an earthy palette of bronze and white.

Among other things, the exhibition shows new versions of Bergström’s beloved Planets, the series that Lena continues to reinvent and which she has exhibited in various variations in Sweden and internationally since the beginning of the millennium. Planets was also a prominent feature in Lena Bergström’s previous successful exhibition, Winter Garden at Galleri Glas 2018.

“A wristwatch from Orrefors should of course have a glass of cut facets,” says designer Lena Bergström. She obviously refers to Orrefors long tradition with cut crystal. “So I concentrated on the glass. It would be the jewelry on the watch.”In the elegantly ground facets, the surroundings reflect. And depending on the choice of color on the dial, the reflections in the facets are different. The leather bracelet and the clean steel ring make up the feel of exclusive and timeless materials. “I wanted the watchwrist to be unisex, beautiful and timeless. Simply a watch I want for myself.”

The rug is entirely made by hand. The special technique of hand-tufting in different directions enhances the three-dimensional feel of Basket. Several threads in different colours creates the desired lustre. The rug is then carefully cut by hand into a tromp l’oeil graphic pattern that pays homage to Swedish handicraft traditions such as birch bark baskets and rucksacks. Sharp angles and soft transitions play the roles in a shadow play that is both illusion and reality. It comes in beige, grey or gren and in four sizes but can be customized as a special order in other sizes.

Kosta Boda 275th anniversary.

Suspending roses in glass is an old art. Rose globes could be found in nearly every Swedish home in the 1960s. Mona Morales-Schildt worked at Kosta from 1958 to 1971, and her elegant rose globes on tall stands were among the glassworks’ most beloved products. Now Lena Bergström has taken up the tradition. For the anniversary exhibition, Bergstrom has created a two-part globe for roses and a bottle of fragrance. Her rose globe has become a tiny spaceship or time capsule of glass for the flower that’s been found as far back as ancient Egyptian burial chambers. The fragrance bottle is unadorned and timeless. But it’s also full of air bubbles.

“I wanted the glass to bubble, just as it makes our emotions bubble! If there’s anything the world needs now, it’s love, and that means we want those emotions to live on like this.”

Well into the 20th century, Swedish glass was a man’s world. Mona Morales-Schildt broke new ground alongside Tyra Lundgren in the 1950s. Lena Bergström is one of our most productive and prize-winning successors to the original artists, and everyone who’s worked with her knows what an enthusiastic designer she is. Down-to-earth, but passionate in everything she does

And roses in a globe aren’t the end of the matter for Bergström. She will also be arriving at the anniversary exhibition with her arms full of dazzling roses! Shimmering red and pink roses in a giant format that literally stretched the glassworks’ talents to the breaking point.

“I’ve made some muscular, virile roses!” she says. “I like how they claim the space and fill up the room.”

Lena Bergström’s beautiful blood-red rose has become a hommage consisting of three unique specimens. Making them is a great challenge for everyone. They were sawn and ground in three sections with great precision, then glued together.

At a diameter of 43 cm, Bergström’s roses have become glorious symbols of the very best of our long history as a glassworks.

Volvo Cars and Swedish glassmaker Orrefors have joined forces to create an exclusive crystal collection. Created by Lena Bergström – one of Sweden’s most acclaimed designers – and Volvo Cars’ award-winning design team, this handmade crystal glassware represents the best of modern Scandinavian design.

“When I was growing up in the north of Sweden, we would go on walks in the woods and take food in small wooden boxes made of plaited birch bark, traditional to the area,” says Lena Bergström. “I used this distinctive diamond pattern as inspiration for the facets on these pieces.”

The clarity and sharpness of each piece owes much to the craftmanship of Orrefors. They also serve as a re ection of the clarity and precision of Volvo design. This latest collection marks the continuation of a collaboration that rst brought these renowned Swedish companies together in the creation of the crystal gear selector in Volvo’s Twin Engine hybrid cars.

The Norrland collection is the result of a long and puposeful collaboration betweenKlässbols Linneväveri and the designer Lena Bergström. The qualities and possibilities of the linen has been the main thread for the work thathas grown out of the looms in Klässbol.

At a distance the low-voicedpatterns of Norrland creates single colours. But when you get closer new patters will appear. ”The strong and graphical characteristics of Norrland ( the northern swedish landscape ) has been my inspiration”, says Lena who grew up in Norrland.

Ever since the early 20’s has the raw material flax and its refinement directed theJohansson family in Klässbol. Their determination and humble belief in quality, their balance between old handicraft and new techniques, their beliefs in what they are doingand that it is the right thing, has spun threads far longer than to the border of Sweden.

Napkins and tablecloths from the little village in Värmland have for several years beenused at the prestigious Nobel feast. Swedish as well as Norwegian embassies worldwide choose products from Klässbols. They are purveyors to HM the King of Sweden, they have been given the honourable task of hand-weaving the very special royal tablecloth.

“The genuine craftmanship and quality philosophy at Klässbols has been developed by generations. It is rare today and very inspiring for me as a designer. And the linnen as material is fantastic. Like the gold and silver of textiles.”
